Democratic Washington state congressional candidate Joe Kent criticized Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday for comparing the January 6 riot in the U.S. Capitol to the 9/11 terrorist attacks by jihadists and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
"Certain dates echo throughout history, including dates that instantly remind all who have lived through them where they were, and what they were doing when our democracy came under assault," Harris said in remarks at the Capitol's Statuary Hall on Thursday morning.
"I was deeply offended because it's absolutely appalling and just completely ridiculous. But what I want people to realize is exactly what she's doing," Kent cautioned. "What she and Joe Biden are doing is... they're taking very powerful imagery and they're saying that the attack on Pearl Harbor, the attack on 9/11, is the same thing that took place on January 6."
"Because that allows people to compare Trump supporters to Nazis, to actual members of Al-Qaeda. And with that imagery comes the justification to turn the tools of the state against them," he announced. Kent is running as a Republican in Washington state's third congressional district.
"These are very deliberate words. We've seen this playbook before. They are echoes of the lead-up to the Iraq War. That they have some intelligence that there's something they can't tell us but we have to trust them, therefore we have to give them the authority to send us into a war, a new war, but that war is here. And that war is against the deplorable, Trump supporters, whatever you want to call it," Joe Kent announced. "And that war has allowed them to deprive our citizens of their constitutional rights."
"Those that are still sitting in a gulag in Washington, DC deprived of their rights and then even other Americans who dissent from the current regime's narrative. Just look no further than what they did to the parents who had the audacity to show up to school board meetings," Kent stated. "They had the FBI's counterterrorism centers turned against them."
Though, of course, Kent wasn't the only one to denounce Harris.
"Your' collective memory' is drowning in exaggeration," Tim Graham of the Media Research Center tweeted in response to Harris. "The 'independent fact checkers' are taking the day off on this hyperbole."
"VP Kamala Harris just equated the riot on January 6 to the terrorist attacks on 9/11 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor," Conservative Kansas radio host John Whitmer said. "These people are so asinine!"
