In a recent development, an 82-year-old inmate in Kansas, who identifies as a transgender woman, has filed a lawsuit demanding to be housed with the general population of the female prison.

Thomas Lamb, now known as Michelle, is serving three life sentences for the brutal murder and sexual abuse of several women in 1969 and 1970.

Lamb has been kept separate from the female inmates due to the severity of the crimes committed and the inmate's conduct while in prison. As reported by Reduxx, Lamb has filed a lawsuit against the Topeka Correctional Facility, the Kansas Department of Corrections, and Governor Laura Kelly, alleging discriminatory treatment by the prison system.

In a statement, Lamb expressed, "This is a grievance against everyone involved in placing me on OSR [other security risk] and HR [housing restriction] status, and keeping me on this status for what is now six months. I request I be placed on general population status immediately, and all information used to place me on this OSR status be removed from my file."

Lamb claims to be suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression due to the isolation from female inmates, leading to "numerous bouts of diarrhea." Lamb further stated, "I'm being treated as if I'm public enemy number one here at TCF, being escorted by two officers all the time. I feel miserable and wake up crying at night. I'm denied the most basic need, especially for us females: the need to have close contact and relationships with other females."

According to Reduxx, Lamb first identified as female while in prison in 2006 and has since been granted several concessions, including access to estrogen and testosterone-blocking drugs, and permission to wear women's underwear, makeup, and earrings.

However, Lamb's prison tenure has not been without controversy. The inmate has violated prison rules regarding inappropriate behavior and contact with other inmates, even entering into a relationship with a 30-year-old female prisoner at one point.

The American Civil Liberties Union is providing legal representation for Lamb, and a ruling on the case is expected to be delivered in early May.
