On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared via Twitter that he would be lifting the mask mandate for children ages 2 to 4 early next week. The announcement comes a little too late for a Mayor who came in with such hope and has only disappointed his base which is now upset he is waiting until next week to keep the mandates for kids. Why not just lift it already?

The move arrives following months of NYC parents demanding that the mayor drop the mandate, stating it was “dystopian” and “depressing.” The effects on kids seem to have been devastating and the Mayor, who had promised on his campaign last year to lift the mandates had never explained why he was keeping them in place - despite daily protests in front of City Hall and scathing op-eds in all the local newspapers. This move to remove the mandates seems to many as a way to misdirect the criticism he is getting for increasing violent crime and a disastrous Subway System that seemingly has a major crime event at least once a day. IT has gotten so bad, that during the peak of rush hour, many trains are barely filled - something that even in the 1970's was unheard of.

“Throughout the current wave,” the mayor announced, “schools have remained the safest places for our children, and beginning Monday, June 13, we will make masks optional for 2-4-year-old children in all early childhood settings.” Those locations include schools and daycare centers.

Adams noted that “we have followed the data, which shows that cases are steadily falling, we‘ve beaten back the latest COVID-19 surge.”

NYC Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan announced on Twitter, “after a two-month sustained increase of #COVID19 transmission, we are finally past the peak of this wave. Cases have fallen since May 23, giving us confidence that we have passed the peak and we are heading into a safer environment.”

This isn’t the first time Adams has set a date for the mandate to be lifted. In March, he promised to lift the mandate on April 4, yet retracted the deadline mentioning an increase of cases due to Omicron.

In May, many parents signed an open letter asking that toddlers no longer be asked to wear masks, with this youngest demographic being the last asked to wear masks in the city, as parents can go out without one.

At the end of his announcement today, Adams stated, “we still strongly recommend that New Yorkers of all ages continue to wear masks indoors, and we will continue to make masks available for any child or school staff member who wishes to continue wearing them.”

Since the pandemic’s start, children of the youngest ages have maintained the lowest infection rates among all demographics.

In NYC, COVID cases have declined since the Omicron bump, and more than 75 percent of the city is vaccinated. Children are the least affected by the more deadly effects of COVID, though can be a vector of transmission.

Father Brian Robinson called the mask mandate “absurdity in its most pure form,” showing the unfairness of placing the weight on the youngest children. Adams tested positive for COVID-19 this year after being seen maskless at several indoor events.

This is not the first time parents have denounced Mayor Adams and his COVID policy for kids. In May, several parents signed an open letter lobbying for the toddler mask mandate to be lifted.
