The riot-ravaged city of Kenosha is weighing whether to erect a public memorial to an ex-convict skateboarder who was shot dead by Kyle Rittenhouse.

Aldermen listened to the suggestion to honor Anthony Huber with a tree and plaque in the city’s Anderson Park at a hearing on Monday evening. They delayed making a judgment until a later date.

Huber’s girlfriend Hannah Gittings put forward the motion for a public memorial to Huber nearly two years after he was one of two men shot dead by Kyle Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the incident. If the commission votes to move forward with the proposal, the responsibility for the upkeep would fall on Gittings.

The shooting occurred amid nights of violent protests in the city after the non-fatal shooting by police of black domestic abuser Jacob Blake. Throughout arguments regarding the matter, Huber’s past criminality, including a domestic abuse charge, was brought up.

It is unclear if that will eventually sway a determination on whether to give him a memorial. In 2018, Huber was found guilty of domestic abuse and disorderly conduct. While in 2012, Huber spent time in prison after a choking incident involving his brother.

One of those who spoke at the hearing was Kevin Matthewson, a former Parks Commission alderman, and Kenosha Guard militia leader. Matthewson described the events of August 25 as “justified.” He continued, “Don’t play games. Deny this. This is a man who is a felon who held a knife to his sister’s throat’ and ‘sliced his brother’s neck.”

The militia leader announced that Huber was a “multiple felon” who ‘played a stupid game on August 25 and unfortunately he lost his life.” Another speaker, Kenosha resident Kathy Woods, announced, “Of all the bonehead things you guys could consider. Don’t consider this.”

Woods continued, “This is an insult to the people who have memorials. Who have done good things.” Matthewson announced that Huber’s family “deserve our prayers but they do not deserve to be honored and memorialized in this city.” Huber was fatally injured after Rittenhouse shot him in the chest. Huber had hit Rittenhouse with a skateboard before being mortally wounded.

The skateboarder had given chase after Rittenhouse shot and killed a different man, 36-year-old convicted pedophile Joseph Rosenbaum. Rittenhouse was acquitted of murder charges in November 2021.

In April 2022, Huber’s girlfriend Hannah Gittings filed paperwork asking for a public memorial to be placed on a flowering dogwood tree in Anderson Park, Kenosha, according to documents filed with the City of Kenosha. The park is located three miles from where Huber was killed.

The motion was voted on by the Kenosha Park Commission on the night of April 25. The committee voted to delay a conclusion on the memorial. The commission is made up of five city aldermen.
