President Biden issues a new budget proposal that includes upwards of $32 billion in new law enforcement spending, taking a detour from the progressive policy of Defunding Police and embracing the Republican stance.

According to Axios, the proposal shows a large boost in dollars, including $20.6 billion for Justice Department discretionary spending on federal law enforcement, compared to $18.6 billion in this year’s budget.

The money would also be provided to community policing through the COPS Hiring Program, a grant program that supplies funding for state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to employ officers. In the Fiscal Year 2021, the program had around $140 million in funding, which would more than double under Biden’s proposed 2022 budget.

While Progressives have pushed initiatives to defend or abolish the police, information on the President’s budget proposal received by Fox News states that Biden “recognizes that if we want to fight crime and make our neighborhoods safe, we need to invest more money in funding effective, accountable, community policing – not less.”

The proposal also has funding for almost 300 new deputy marshals and other officials at the U.S. Marshals Service who would help local agencies catch violent fugitives.

Biden’s budget plan also targets gun violence, including funding for prevention and having the CDC and National Institutes of Health study gun violence as a public health issue.

The President has been looking for ways to distance himself from Progressives over how to combat crime, and to convince swing voters he understands their concerns about feeling unsafe.

In his State of the Union address this month, Biden said, “We should all agree: The answer is not to defund the police. It’s to fund the police. Fund them. Fund them. Fund them with resources and training.”

Total budget Biden is expected to announce increases across defense and non-defense spending and a “billionaire's tax” to pay for $1 trillion in deficit reduction over a decade, the Washington Post and Associated Press reported.

“The President’s budget will reflect three important values: fiscal responsibility, safety and security at home and abroad, and a commitment to building a better America,” one White House official told Axios.

While Presidents use their budget to speak about their spending priorities and overall agenda, their official proposals rarely become law.
