While speaking to U.S. military veterans and caregivers at Veterans Affairs facilities in Texas on Tuesday, President Joe Biden made a puzzling comment about the representatives joining him at the event.

The President was joined by Texas Reps. Marc Veasey, Jake Ellzey, and Colin Allred to discuss environmental exposures that military servicemen and women experience.

“The three congressmen you have here, two of them look like they really could and did play ball and the other one looks like he can bomb you,” Biden said.

Before saying this, Biden spoke directly to Ellzey, sitting in the crowd.

“Jake, you’re a fighter pilot. You get this stuff. I mean, you know what I mean. You can smile, Jake. It’s OK. It’s OK,” Biden said as the crowd laughed. “Jake’s a Republican, but I like the hell out of him. He’s got — no, I’m serious. This guy’s the real deal.”

Biden finished by adding that the three congressmen are “a tough group but a good group.”

The video of his comment has been shared widely across social media, with many calling it racist.

“The context does not change the idiocy of Biden’s comment,” one Twitter user wrote. “Black guys make good ball players in Joe’s racist view.”

Comedian Tim Young called the President “a racist piece of s***.” Fellow comedians, the “Hodgetwins,” also questioned to what standard the Left would hold the comment.

The representatives have not commented. Before the event, Ellzey said he looked forward to it as an opportunity to discuss differences of opinion regarding American policy with the President.

“This will give me an opportunity to sit face to face with the President and say how we should open up our economy, how we should open up our energy resources and close down our border and stay away from any negotiations with Russia and Iran on a new Iran deal,” Ellzey said in a video before the event. “I can either do that on Twitter or Facebook in an angry way or I can sit face-to-face with the leader of the free world and talk about those things as quiet professionals, and that is what I aim to do.”

In President Biden’s first address to a joint session of Congress in 2021, he promised to root out systemic racism and grow efforts to create a more fair country. He said that the United States had “seen the knee of injustice on the neck of Black Americans” and declared that “now is our opportunity to make some real progress.”

One year later, Biden returned to Capitol Hill to address Congress again. This time, those issues were not the focus.

“From a President who said that he would make race equity a linchpin of his administration, he didn’t mention it,” Cliff Albright, a co-founder of the group Black Voters Matter, said on a panel with other Progressives who were responding to Biden’s State of the Union address.
