Renowned actor Jeff Daniels has expressed his hope that voters will select President Biden in the 2024 general election, amidst what he describes as the ongoing "war on democracy."

Daniels, known for his role in "The Newsroom," criticized former President Trump, the likely GOP nominee, for his condescending attitude towards Midwestern residents. He suggested that the voters in the "middle" are observing the GOP's self-destruction.

"We're flyover country, and we always have a chip on our shoulder about that. We're not as naive as people, particularly Trump, think we are. He talks down to us. He talks past us. He lies to us. But we understand," Daniels stated during his appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," where he was promoting his new Netflix drama "A Man in Full."

Daniels identified two ongoing "wars," one within the Republican Party and the other for "democracy." He expressed optimism that the voters in the "middle" will choose Biden in the upcoming November election, as they are looking forward to the 2028 contest.

"I'm cautiously optimistic that the people in the middle, the people in states like Michigan, will say, 'you know what? We're better than this.' I'm going to vote for Biden, even though he's old, which also translates into wise and wisdom, which we may need right now because the election I really want to vote on is the one in 2028, when people are now running with the future," Daniels said.

Recent polls, however, indicate Trump leading Biden among registered voters in a hypothetical match-up — 49 percent to 43 percent, respectively, according to a CNN survey.
