USRowing, the national governing body for the sport of rowing, has posthumously stripped two-time Olympic medalist and esteemed coach, Ted Nash, of his honors.

This decision follows an investigation that substantiated allegations of sexual abuse against a minor in 1973.

The investigation was initiated after Jennifer Fox, the alleged victim, reached out to USRowing in late 2022, according to a press release from the organization. The press release acknowledged that Nash's inability to respond to the allegations, due to his death, was outweighed by the gravity of the accusations.

USRowing stated, "Having reviewed the investigation’s findings, USRowing believes there is compelling evidence supporting Ms. Fox’s allegations of child sex abuse by Mr. Nash. Regardless of Mr. Nash’s contributions to the sport of rowing, our commitment to the safety and well-being of our participants – especially youth athletes – is of the utmost importance and compels us to act in accordance with our values."

At the time of the alleged incident, Nash would have been 40 years old, while Fox was only 13, as reported by The Associated Press (AP). Nash, who passed away in 2021, had been recognized with the 2005 Man of the Year award and a USRowing Medal of Honor in 2013. Both of these accolades, among others, are being rescinded by the organization. Furthermore, Nash will not be considered for any future awards by USRowing.

The investigation was conducted by the law firm Shearman & Sterling LLP and its full report was published by USRowing. The investigators clarified that their mandate was to "independently investigate" the sexual abuse allegation. They were not asked "to provide recommendations as to what USRowing should do in response to the investigative findings." They also noted that they were not "tasked with seeking to determine the truth of Ms. Fox’s allegations beyond a reasonable doubt, by a preponderance of the evidence, or to any other specific legal standard of proof."

Nash was a celebrated figure in the rowing community, having been part of the team that clinched a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics, as noted by Boston University. He also won a bronze medal in the 1964 Olympics, according to The Olympians.
