Nina Jankowicz, the former leader of the Biden administration's short-lived "Disinformation Governance Board," is now joining forces with liberal activists to spearhead a new nonprofit organization.

The American Sunlight Project, as it is called, is dedicated to "increasing the cost of lies that undermine our democracy."

The organization recently launched and sent a letter to the Republican-led House Oversight and Judiciary Committees on April 22. The letter criticized the committees for their investigation into individuals and organizations advocating censorship. Despite the organization's claims of bipartisan credentials, its staff and advisory board are predominantly composed of individuals with a history of involvement in left-wing activist organizations.

In 2022, Jankowicz led an initiative backed by the Department of Homeland Security to combat alleged disinformation by establishing the "Disinformation Governance Board." However, the project was terminated a few months later following severe criticism that it was a precursor to government-endorsed censorship.

Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah described the board as a "terrible idea," suggesting it would send a message to the world that "we're going to be spreading propaganda in our own country," as reported by the Associated Press. "Rather than police our border, Homeland Security has decided to make policing Americans' speech its top priority," Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri said around the same time.

Jankowicz herself faced criticism for promoting misleading narratives. For instance, she claimed that the Hunter Biden laptop controversy was merely a product of former President Donald Trump's 2020 reelection campaign. However, multiple outlets, including the Daily Caller News Foundation, have since authenticated the laptop.

Eddie Vale, a spokesperson for The American Sunlight Project, was hesitant to divulge details about the future operations and finances of Jankowicz's new venture when contacted by the Daily Caller News Foundation. "We will obviously share more publicly as things develop but aren't going to be showing everyone our entire playbook on day one," he said when asked if the organization would engage in political advertising or lobbying.

The organization informed the New York Times that it plans to run advertisements about the threats it believes disinformation poses to the public. As a 501(c)(4) nonprofit registered with the Internal Revenue Service, The American Sunlight Project is legally permitted to fund ads supporting or opposing candidates for federal office.

Vale stated that the group's immediate focus is on targeting House Republicans who have opposed so-called disinformation research, urging them to release the transcripts of disinformation researchers they've interviewed. The House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, primarily composed of Republicans, has used subpoena power to compel individuals claiming to study "disinformation" to testify under oath.

Vale declined to provide the DCNF with a detailed account of The American Sunlight Project's financial resources, revealing only that it has a budget of at least $1 million and that it has "been getting a steady stream of online donations" since its launch was announced.

Vale's biography on his company's website describes him as "a veteran of Democratic and progressive political and legislative campaigns," further muddying The American Sunlight Project's claims of bipartisan branding. Vale is also a former vice president of American Bridge, a research organization known for unearthing information damaging to conservatives, often for Democratic campaigns.

Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos, the co-founder of The American Sunlight Project, also has roots in the left-wing activism industry. From 2020 to 2021, he managed "organization-wide strategic communications and media relations" for Protect Democracy, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Protect Democracy is the collective operation of two separate nonprofits, the 501(c)(3) Protect Democracy Project and the 501(c)(4) group United to Protect Democracy, as stated on the organization's website. Democratic megadonors, left-wing dark money networks, and George Soros' philanthropic empire have poured millions into Protect Democracy since its inception.

Most of The American Sunlight Project's advisory board also has ties to the left. Emily Horne, a Biden White House official from 2021 to 2022, is a member of the organization's advisory board. Ineke Mushovic, the former executive director of Wide Angle Research, a left-wing nonprofit that produces messaging aimed at changing people's opinions on LGBT issues, abortion, guns, and immigration, among other things, also sits on the board.

Katie Harbath, a member of The American Sunlight Project's board, has worked on Republican campaigns, according to her biography on the Georgetown University Institute of Politics and Public Service's website.
