Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, a 72-year-old former CIA officer and FBI contract linguist, admitted guilt to charges of espionage for China in a Honolulu federal court on Friday.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has accumulated substantial evidence against Ma, demonstrating his involvement in sharing classified information with China's Ministry of State Security for over a decade, starting in 2001.

The DOJ's court filing revealed a plethora of incriminating evidence against Ma, including a video that showed him exchanging classified information for a significant sum of money. In a conversation with an undercover FBI agent, Ma expressed his wish for the success of his "motherland."

NBC News reported that the classified information Ma shared included details about CIA sources and assets, international operations, secure communication practices, and operational tradecraft.

Ma has been in custody since his arrest in August 2020. The DOJ's evidence includes an hour-long video of Ma and an older relative, also a former CIA officer, providing classified information to Chinese intelligence officers in 2001. The video also shows Ma counting the $50,000 he received from the Chinese agents for his service.

During a sting operation, Ma accepted thousands of dollars in cash in exchange for his past espionage activities. He expressed his desire to see the "motherland" succeed to an undercover FBI agent posing as a Chinese intelligence officer.

As part of a plea agreement, Ma admitted guilt to one count of conspiracy to gather or deliver national defense information to a foreign government. Prosecutors have recommended a 10-year sentence for Ma, but the final decision will be made by a judge at Ma's sentencing hearing on September 11.

This case underscores the ongoing threat of espionage and the need for vigilance in protecting national security. It also serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by individuals with access to classified information who choose to betray their country.
