In the wake of allegations of abuse against rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs, New York City's Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has revealed that his administration is contemplating the withdrawal of the Key to the City previously awarded to Combs.

The allegations surfaced following the re-emergence of a 2016 surveillance video showing Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend in a Los Angeles hotel.

During an interview with WPIX on Monday, Mayor Adams expressed his deep disturbance after viewing the footage of Combs' violent assault on Cassie Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel corridor five years ago. "The committee and the team has never rescinded a key before, but we are now sitting down to see what the next steps forward are going to be. We are taking everything under analysis and the team will come back to me with a final determination," Adams stated.

The Key to the City, as described on the city's official website, is bestowed upon individuals whose contributions to the public and the common good reach the pinnacle of achievement. Fox News reported that Combs received this honor on September 15, 2023, following the release of his first studio album in 17 years. Other notable recipients of this award include the late New York Police Detective Luis Alvarez, recognized for his advocacy for 9/11 survivors and first responders, the 1969 New York Mets, and the US Women's National Soccer Team.

The controversy surrounding Combs escalated when a video of him chasing Ventura down a hotel hallway, clad only in a towel, became viral. The video shows him throwing Ventura to the ground, kicking her twice, and then dragging her out of sight. Following the video's widespread circulation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office issued a statement confirming that due to the statute of limitations, Combs cannot be prosecuted.

Combs issued an apology after the video's viral spread. "It's so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life. Sometimes you got to do that. I was f*cked up. I mean I hit rock bottom. But I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable,” he said.
