Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant living unlawfully in the United States, has been indicted on multiple charges, including the brutal murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.

The indictment was handed down on Tuesday and includes charges of malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, and voyeurism, according to court documents obtained by Fox News.

Ibarra is alleged to have inflicted fatal blunt-force trauma to the head of 22-year-old Riley, and asphyxiated her in a manner yet to be determined by the jury. The attack occurred while Riley was out running on the University of Georgia campus in Athens on February 22.

In addition to the murder charges, Ibarra was indicted on counts of aggravated assault with intent to rape, aggravated battery, obstructing a person from making a 911 call, tampering with evidence, and being a voyeur. The indictment alleges that Ibarra was seen peering through a window at an on-campus apartment, spying on a university staff member on the same day he killed Riley.

Ibarra resided in an apartment near the campus perimeter, close to where Riley was running when she was attacked. UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark described the murder as a "crime of opportunity." Riley's lifeless body was discovered approximately five minutes from Ibarra's residence.

Ibarra entered the U.S. illegally through El Paso, Texas, on September 8, 2022, along with his wife and her son, seeking asylum. They were later released for further processing by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Subsequently, Ibarra was spotted in New York City, riding a scooter in Queens with his 5-year-old stepson, who was not wearing the required safety helmet or child restraints. He was charged with a felony and released. Following this incident, Ibarra relocated to Athens, Georgia, to live with his brother, Diego Ibarra, not far from the university campus where Riley was tragically killed.
