In a recent development, Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared on Sunday that the nation has decided to terminate the operations of Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera within its borders.

This decision also includes the seizure of some of the network's equipment.

This announcement follows Netanyahu's previous statement in April, where he labeled Al Jazeera as the "mouthpiece" of Hamas, the terrorist organization responsible for the attacks on Israeli and other citizens on October 7.

"After discussion by the Security Cabinet and pursuant to my directive, today the Government discussed closing Al Jazeera broadcasts in Israel," Netanyahu stated in a press release on Sunday.

Netanyahu further accused Al Jazeera correspondents of jeopardizing Israel's security and inciting against IDF soldiers. "The time has come to eject Hamas's mouthpiece from our country," the Prime Minister asserted.

Echoing Netanyahu's sentiments, Israeli Communications Minister Karhi pledged immediate action against those exploiting press freedom to undermine Israel's security and IDF soldiers, and incite terrorism during wartime.

"There will be no freedom of expression for Hamas's mouthpieces in Israel. Al Jazeera will be closed immediately and its equipment will be confiscated," Karhi announced.

In response to these developments, Al Jazeera issued a statement on X, denouncing the move as "deceptive and slanderous."

"As the world marked World Press Freedom Day, the Israeli government closed Al Jazeera's offices, preventing the public from accessing its content, disregarding the universally recognized fundamentals of freedom of expression," the news company stated. "Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemns and denounces this criminal act that violates human rights and the basic right to access of information."

The network firmly rejected the allegations made by Israeli authorities, suggesting a breach of professional media standards. It reiterated its unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in its Code of Ethics.

Earlier in April, Netanyahu had expressed his intention to halt Al Jazeera's broadcasting operations in Israel. "The terrorist channel Al Jazeera will no longer broadcast from Israel. I intend to take immediate action in accordance with the new law to halt the channel's activities," the Prime Minister had stated.

In 2021, Al Jazeera was recognized by Hamas for its coverage of the conflict between the terrorist group and Israel.
