In a late-night incident on Saturday, a man lost his life after his vehicle crashed into an outer gate of the White House, according to U.S. Secret Service.

The unidentified male driver was reportedly "traveling at a high rate of speed" when he "collided with an outer perimeter gate on the White House complex" around 10:30 p.m.

The Secret Service, in a statement released on Sunday, confirmed that the driver was found deceased at the scene. "Security protocols were implemented as officers cleared the vehicle and attempted to render aid to the driver," the statement read. The agency also assured that there was no threat to the White House following the incident.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington, D.C. responded to the crash at the intersection of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The MPD stated that the vehicle had crashed into a security barrier around the White House complex. The incident is currently being investigated as a traffic crash by the MPD's Major Crash Investigations Unit.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, appears to be the sole casualty of the crash. The area around the crash site saw "limited traffic closures" enforced past midnight on Sunday, as reported by Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. He further clarified that there was no public safety threat, but investigations by the Secret Service would continue in tandem with the MPD's probe into the cause of the crash.

This incident follows a similar non-fatal crash on January 8, where a driver crashed into an exterior White House gate and was subsequently arrested.
