South Dakota's Republican Governor, Kristi Noem, is currently embroiled in a controversy following a report by The Guardian.

The report reveals that in her forthcoming book, Noem admits to shooting and killing her family's 14-month-old hunting dog, Cricket, and a goat, following a series of aggressive incidents.

The book, titled "No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward," provides a candid portrayal of the difficult decisions Noem has had to make in both her personal life and political career.

In the book, Governor Noem recounts a distressing incident where Cricket, a wirehair pointer, exhibited uncontrollable behavior during a hunting trip. This behavior escalated to the point where the dog attacked chickens and attempted to bite Noem herself.

The Guardian report includes an excerpt from Noem's book:

Noem had taken Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, hoping to calm the young dog and teach her appropriate behavior. However, Cricket disrupted the hunt, becoming overly excited and chasing the birds. Despite Noem's attempts to control Cricket using an electronic collar, the dog remained uncontrollable. The situation worsened when Cricket escaped from Noem's truck and attacked a local family's chickens, killing them one by one.

Noem describes Cricket as behaving like "a trained assassin." When Noem finally managed to grab Cricket, the dog attempted to bite her. Noem apologized to the chicken's owner, compensated them for their loss, and helped dispose of the chicken carcasses.

Noem writes that Cricket was "the picture of pure joy" throughout the incident. She admits to hating the dog, describing her as "untrainable," "dangerous," and "worthless as a hunting dog." Noem realized then that she had to euthanize Cricket.

Noem also decided to kill an unnamed goat in the same manner as Cricket. However, the goat survived the initial shot, leading Noem to retrieve another shell and put the goat down.

Responding to The Guardian's report, Noem defended her actions, stating, "We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years. If you want more real, honest, and politically INcorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping, preorder 'No Going Back.'"

Noem reiterated her defense during an interview with Sean Hannity on FOX News, emphasizing the necessity of making difficult decisions on a farm.

Noem told Hannity, "You know how the fake news works. They leave out some or most of the facts of a story. They put the worst spin on it, and that’s what’s happened in this case. I hope people really do buy this book and they find out the truth of this story, because the truth of this story is that this was a working dog and it was not a puppy."

Noem further explained that Cricket was an extremely dangerous dog that had been given to her family as a second chance due to her aggressive behavior. The day Cricket was put down was the day she attacked livestock and Noem herself.

Noem stated that her book is filled with tough decisions she has had to make throughout her life. She hopes that readers will understand that unlike most politicians who shy away from the truth and tough decisions, she does not.

Despite Noem's defense, the majority of the public response has been critical of her actions.
