In a bold move on Wednesday, a coalition of undocumented immigrants and their supporters staged a protest at the Michigan state capitol, right outside the House floor.

Their demand was clear: they want the right to obtain driver's licenses.

This demonstration comes at a time when legislation that would grant driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants is being considered in both the Michigan House and Senate. The group's rallying cry echoed through the halls of the capitol: "What do we want? Driver's licenses! When do we want it? Now!"

The proposed legislation, collectively known as the Drive SAFE bills (House Bills 4410-4412 and Senate Bills 265-267), is currently stalled at the committee stage. If passed, these bills would eliminate the existing requirement for proof of citizenship or legal presence to obtain a driver's license.

The issue of driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants has a complex history in Michigan. In 1995, then-Democratic Michigan Attorney General Frank Kelley issued a ruling that undocumented immigrants should have access to these documents. This ruling held until 2007 when Republican successor Mike Cox reversed it, stating, "there can be no doubt that a rational basis exists for denying driver's licenses to illegal aliens."

Since that time, civil rights groups and some Democratic politicians have advocated for the reinstatement of the right for all Michigan residents to obtain a driver's license, irrespective of their legal status. In October, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission (MCRC) issued an official resolution urging the legislature and governor to advance this plan. They argued that the current policy disproportionately affects ethnic and racial minorities.

MCRC Chair Portia Roberson stated, "To ensure everyone in Michigan has the ability to fully exercise their civil rights, we must allow those who qualify to obtain a driver's license." She further added, "Today the Commission spoke unanimously, directing the executive office and the state legislature to find a solution that will allow all those residing and working in Michigan to have the option to obtain a license."

The debate over the Drive SAFE bills continues, with the voices of undocumented immigrants and their allies echoing through the Michigan state capitol, demanding change.
