Israeli authorities are increasingly apprehensive that the International Criminal Court (ICC) may soon issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other high-ranking officials.

The charges are linked to the war in Gaza, according to various reports.

The ICC might accuse these senior government figures of implementing an overly severe military response to the attacks on Israel by Hamas on October 7. They may also be accused of obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, as reported by the New York Times, citing both Israeli and foreign officials.

The New York Times suggests that any warrants issued by the ICC would likely be perceived globally as a significant moral censure. An official reportedly stated that the potential for such warrants has influenced Israeli decision-making in recent weeks.

These warrants could potentially hinder the travel of Israeli officials. They may also be issued against leaders of Hamas, the New York Times reports.

This news follows a statement on Sunday by Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, who said, "We expect the court to refrain from issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli political and security officials," as reported by Reuters.

"We will not bow our heads or be deterred and will continue to fight," Katz reportedly added. He also urged Israeli embassies to enhance security due to the risk of a "wave of severe antisemitism."

On Friday, Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on X, "While the ICC will not affect Israel’s actions, it would set a dangerous precedent that threatens the soldiers and officials of all democracies fighting savage terrorism and wanton aggression."

"Under my leadership, Israel will never accept any attempt by the ICC to undermine its inherent right of self-defense," he continued. "The threat to seize the soldiers and officials of the Middle East’s only democracy and the world’s only Jewish state is outrageous. We will not bow to it."

In October, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan stated that the court has jurisdiction over potential war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip, according to Reuters.

Reuters also reports that while Israel is not a member of the court and does not recognize its jurisdiction, the Palestinian territories were granted member status in 2015.

The ICC states on its website that it "investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression."
