Universities Have Lost Their Way, Are They The Root Of The Problem?

This trend is evident in recent actions taken by Google, Vanderbilt University, Columbia University, Pomona College, American University, and the University of Georgia, among others.

Google recently terminated 28 employees who staged a sit-in at their superior's office, protesting the company's contract with Israel. Similarly, Vanderbilt and Columbia Universities have taken disciplinary action against student protesters who illegally occupied buildings on their campuses. Pomona College, American University, and the University of Georgia have also suspended student activists for causing disruptions.

These actions signal a broader societal shift, a return to the rule of law, respect for authority, tolerance of difference, and civil behavior. These are the core American values that, in recent years, have been sidelined in favor of placating activist intolerance.

The disciplinary measures taken by these institutions are the first steps on a long road back to sanity. The path is fraught with challenges, as evidenced by the April 15 protests where activists used their bodies to blockade airports, bridges, and highways across the country. However, these actions also indicate that America is now moving in the right direction.

Claire Shipman, the board of trustees co-chair at Columbia University, provided further evidence of this trend during her testimony before the House Committee on Education & the Workforce. She highlighted the issue of antisemitic protests on campus, attributing them to universities losing their way as institutions of learning and becoming breeding grounds for anti-American revolutionaries.

Shipman's vision for a better Columbia rejects the prevailing attitudes that have tasked higher education with creating politically active social justice warriors. Google's swift action against its protesting employees is a case in point. It stands in stark contrast to Netflix's handling of a similar situation in 2021 when a group of LGBTQ employees walked out in protest of a Dave Chapelle special.

Similarly, university presidents are demonstrating more decisiveness than in November 2023, when the University of Michigan tolerated over 200 anti-Israel student protesters occupying an administrative building. Yale University, for instance, warned its protesters of consequences and promptly arrested over 40 students.

Therefore, it is imperative that higher education institutions get their act together. Doing so will not only benefit our economy, communities, and society but also safeguard the core values that define us as a nation.
