The decision of where to pursue a four-year degree is a pivotal one for students, impacting not only their educational trajectory and career prospects but also shaping their character and identity.

This choice is particularly significant for students of faith, who may find themselves at odds with the prevailing culture on many college campuses. For Roman Catholic students and non-Catholics alike, Catholic universities present an appealing option, offering a blend of academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and a campus culture deeply influenced by Church teachings.

Despite a 3% decline in overall college enrollment since 2010, as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics, many Catholic universities are experiencing a surge in enrollment. Providence College, located in Providence, Rhode Island, was established in 1917 by Dominican friars. Today, Dominican friars and sisters continue to serve as professors, administrators, chaplains, and counselors. The college's mission is deeply rooted in its Dominican identity, which, according to the school's website, seeks "understanding not only for its own sake, but because we believe that the truth informs us about our place in the world and orients us towards that good life which all men and women desire." In 2024, U.S. News and World Report ranked Providence College as the top university in the northern U.S. region.

The Catholic University of America, located in Washington, D.C., is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. The college places a strong emphasis on adhering to Catholic teaching, with faculty making voluntary oaths of fidelity to the Catholic Magisterium each year. Ave Maria University, located in Ave Maria, Florida, was founded by entrepreneur and businessman Tom S. Monaghan, the founder of Domino’s Pizza. His dream was to "restore Catholic higher education amid an age of secularism, progressivism and even doctrinal divergence in Catholic institutions." Ave Maria University was established in 2003, becoming the first new Catholic university since 1963.

Benedictine College, set on the bank of the Missouri River in Atchison, Kansas, is committed to the "beliefs and natural principles that form the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and it is committed further to those specific matters of faith of the Roman Catholic tradition," according to its website. The college is sponsored by the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey and the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery, and presents itself as the inheritor of the Benedictine Order’s 1,500-year tradition.

John Paul the Great Catholic University, located in Escondido, California, was founded in 2003. The university focuses on serving artists and innovators.
