In a peculiar incident that has captured global attention, a Brazilian woman was found attempting to secure a bank loan using her deceased uncle's body.

Paulo Roberto Braga, 68, was reportedly malnourished at the time of his death, and there are suspicions that he may have been poisoned, as per reports.

Braga's cause of death was initially attributed to broncho-aspiration and heart failure, as revealed in an autopsy report obtained by Metrópoles. The report also indicated signs of malnourishment. A doctor who attended to him in an emergency care unit suspected poisoning, leading to a toxicological examination of a blood sample from his stomach.

Braga was confirmed to have passed away on Tuesday, hours before his niece, Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes, 42, wheeled his body into a bank, manipulating his hand to sign for a $3,250 loan. Metrópoles reported that Braga, who had a history of health complications, required special care at the time of his death. He had been diagnosed with pneumonia and tachycardia during a recent visit to an emergency care unit. Furthermore, he was oxygen-dependent and had difficulty swallowing.

Nunes now faces charges of theft by fraud and desecration of a corpse. Her attorney has suggested that her actions may have been influenced by mental health issues. The incident gained widespread attention after a video of Nunes with Braga's body, pretending he was alive to sign the loan approval, went viral.

In the disturbing footage, first aired by TV Globo, Nunes can be heard instructing the corpse, "Uncle, are you listening? You need to sign [the loan contract]. If you don’t sign, there’s no way, because I can’t sign for you." She further implores, "Sign so you don’t give me any more headaches, I can’t take it anymore."

Bank employees, alarmed by Braga's unhealthy appearance, alerted the police. It was later established that Braga had been dead for several hours. Additional footage showed Nunes arriving at the bank in a taxi, with the driver assisting her in moving Braga's body from the car to the wheelchair. A video from the previous day also depicted Nunes taking a visibly alive Braga to the emergency room.
