Iran Issues 'Mission Complete' Statement, Alongside A Stern Warning To The United States

In a recent statement issued by Iran's United Nations mission in New York, the nation seemed to extend an olive branch to Israel, suggesting a halt to the escalating conflict if Israel considers it "concluded."

The statement, shared on a social media platform, was rooted in Article 51 of the UN Charter, which pertains to legitimate defense.

"Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus," the mission’s statement read. The statement further warned that if Israel were to make another "mistake," Iran's response would be significantly more severe. The statement also urged the United States to refrain from involvement in the conflict.

This statement follows Iran's launch of three waves of projectiles, including suicide drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, at Israel. This was in retaliation to an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. The attack, which resulted in the death of seven high-ranking members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), is widely attributed to Israel, although no Israeli official has claimed responsibility.

Article 51 of the United Nations charter asserts the right of individual or collective self-defense in the event of an armed attack against a UN Member, until the Security Council has taken necessary measures to maintain international peace and security.

Historically, Iran has shown disregard for the diplomatic protection of embassies and consulates, especially those of the U.S. and Israel. Iran and its chief strategic ally, the U.S.-designated terrorist movement Hezbollah in Lebanon, have been implicated in the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut in 1983, which resulted in the death of 63 people, including 17 Americans. Furthermore, in 1983, suicide truck bombers targeted the barracks of American and French members of a multinational force in Lebanon, causing the death of 220 U.S. Marines, 18 U.S. Navy sailors, three U.S. Army soldiers, and 58 French troops.

More recently, an Argentine court found Iran, in collaboration with Hezbollah, responsible for the bombings on the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) and Israeli embassy in 1994, as reported by The Associated Press.

In 1979, radical Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, holding approximately 52 Americans hostage in a crisis that significantly damaged President Jimmy Carter’s image and popularity ahead of the 1980 presidential election, which he subsequently lost.

Last week, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations proposed a motion to condemn Israel for the Damascus strike. However, the United States, Britain, and France all opposed the statement, arguing that too many facts about the attack remained unclear. The statement was not adopted due to a lack of consensus among members.

In response, Russia and Iran criticized members of the Security Council for failing to adopt the statement, which Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov labeled a "political killing," according to Middle East Monitor.
