The intelligence community is grappling with a renewed "Axis of Evil," a term first coined in 2002, now referring to Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

These authoritarian regimes are intent on interfering in elections, launching cyberattacks, and destabilizing democracies, including the United States and its allies.

In this context, the prospect of Donald Trump returning to the presidency on January 20th poses a significant national security risk. The Biden administration and those who served under Trump must communicate this threat to voters, emphasizing the potential domestic and global implications.

As early as mid-July 2024, following his official nomination at the Republican National Convention, Trump would be entitled to receive intelligence briefings. Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has expressed concerns about Trump's potential misuse of this information, suggesting that these briefings should be "dumbed down."

During Trump's presidency, intelligence agencies were cautious about the information they provided him, considering him a security risk. "Officials were even more cautious about what information they provided Mr. Trump because some saw the president himself as a security risk," the New York Times reported in 2022, quoting CIA counterintelligence official Douglas London.

The intelligence community's concerns date back to January 2017, when an American intelligence official reportedly warned Israeli officials about Russia's potential influence over Trump. The official cautioned Israel to be wary of sharing sensitive information with the Trump administration, fearing it could be leaked to the Russians. This warning proved prescient when such a leak occurred four months later.

If the election were held today, Trump would likely win, posing additional challenges for the intelligence community as they combat the Axis of Evil. Former CIA director John Brennan has warned that a Trump victory could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine, as Trump could reduce or even halt financial and military aid to Kyiv.

Trump's long-standing connections with Russia continue to raise eyebrows. NATO is now taking extra precautions following Trump's assertion that Russia should be able to do "whatever the hell they want" to NATO members who fail to meet their defense spending targets.

Despite these concerns, Trump, as a U.S. president, does not require a security clearance. However, his extensive business dealings with Russian oligarchs would likely have prevented him from obtaining one as a private citizen. His son, Donald Trump Jr., once stated, "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets," and, "We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia."

Trump's disregard for the handling and protection of sensitive information is well-documented, with reports of him flushing documents down the White House toilet and tweeting a sensitive Iranian photo. These actions have led to a 32-count indictment against him for violating the Espionage Act.

The question of Trump's loyalty to the United States also arises, given his encouragement of supporters to prevent the certification of a lawful election on January 6, 2021. His business relationship with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which includes hosting the prince's LIV Golf tournaments at Trump courses, raises further questions about potential conflicting allegiances.

If Trump is reelected, the intelligence community will face the dual challenge of combating the Axis of Evil and reporting to a president known as a security risk. This scenario could have significant implications for the nation's security and stability.
