In a significant move, Idaho's Republican Governor Brad Little has enacted a law that bars the use of taxpayer funds for transgender surgeries and related procedures.

The legislation, which was passed with ease in both the state House and Senate, restricts the allocation of public funds for transgender procedures and mandates that such procedures cannot be conducted in government-owned buildings or properties. The House endorsed the bill with a 58-11 vote, while the Senate approved it with a 26-8 vote.

The legislation's statement of purpose elucidates, "The proposed legislation ensures taxpayer dollars are not used to provide medical treatment or surgeries for the purpose of changing the appearance of a person’s sex in a way that is not consistent with their biological sex.

These medical and surgical interventions can cause irreversible physical alterations; and some render the patient sterile or with lifelong sexual dysfunction, while others mutilate healthy body organs."

The law also includes a clause that prohibits the use of Idaho Medicaid funds for transgender procedures. Furthermore, it prevents government-employed doctors from performing these procedures within the scope of their government duties.

Governor Little's endorsement of the bill, initially reported by the Daily Caller, was widely anticipated following its successful passage through the legislature. Senator Ben Toews, during the bill's debate, argued, "If the government continues to send our tax dollars towards false answers to real questions, we do a terrible disservice to our citizens."

The legislation faced opposition from Democrats and liberal organizations such as the ACLU. However, it received support from conservative groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). ADF Senior Counsel Matt Sharp, lauding Governor Little's decision, stated, "There are only two sexes—male and female—and public funds shouldn’t be used to deny this basic truth.

Now and always, our loved ones deserve the loving embrace of family members who guide them toward this reality, along with access to safe and effective counseling. People should not be subjected to harmful—often irreversible—drugs and surgeries that block healthy development, alter hormonal balances, and remove healthy organs and body parts."

Sharp further added, "Idaho, through the leadership of sponsors Rep. Julianne Young, Rep. Bruce Skaug and Sen. Ben Toews and with the support of the Legislature and Gov. Little, now rightly joins a growing number of states that have enacted similar protections from these experimental procedures and bad science."

While approximately two dozen states have prohibited transgender procedures on children, only about ten have restricted state funds from being used to finance the procedures on others.
