Michigan's Democratic Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, is facing criticism for proposing a "newcomer rental subsidy" that would incentivize landlords to provide housing for illegal immigrants.

The program, as detailed on Michigan's official website, would offer landlords up to $500 per month as compensation for renting to these individuals.

The Midwesterner, a local news outlet, reported on the controversial initiative, quoting the state's website: "Many refugees and other newcomers face critical housing challenges, and this program will increase access to better and more affordable housing opportunities while supporting a more rapid social integration to refugees and other newcomer populations to Michigan."

The subsidy program, dubbed the "Newcomer Rental Subsidy," would provide eligible households with rental assistance of up to $500 per month for a maximum of 12 months.

Eligibility would be determined based on immigration status and household income. Beneficiaries of the program would include illegal immigrants with an "eligible immigration status," such as those who have claimed asylum.

Tudor Dixon, the GOP candidate who ran against Whitmer in the 2022 gubernatorial race, expressed his disapproval of the program in an interview with Fox News. "Gretchen Whitmer is enabling Joe Biden’s open border policies by handing out cash to anyone who will take in unvetted illegal immigrants, undoubtedly risking the safety of our neighborhoods and communities," Dixon said.

He added, "After the murder of Ruby Garcia less than a week ago, Whitmer should immediately cancel this program and demand Biden secure the border for the good of Michigan citizens."

In February, ABC 12 reported on Michigan's efforts to settle illegal immigrants through a volunteer sponsorship program run by the Office of Global Michigan (OGM). The OGM is led by Executive Director Poppy Sias Hernandez, who was appointed by Whitmer in 2020 as the first-ever Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer in the Michigan governor's office.

Hernandez's appointment to the USDA Equity Commission in February 2022 was announced by Whitmer, who said, "Poppy has served the people of Michigan admirably for years, including as a member of my executive office, and I know she will be an important part of this commission's work to ensure equal opportunity for all in agriculture."
