Political Rage Punished: California Man Faces Justice For Threatening These Two Top U.S. Officials

A man from California has been handed an 11-month prison sentence for leaving threatening voicemails for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, as per an announcement by the Justice Department on Wednesday.

David Allen Carrier, aged 44, admitted guilt to two charges of making threats against a federal official back in December, subsequent to being indicted by a grand jury three months earlier.

According to court documents referenced by the Justice Department, Carrier, a resident of Concord, made threats to physically harm Pelosi in a voicemail dated January 21, 2021, just 15 days following the riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Nearly a year and a half later, on June 30, 2022, Carrier dialed the Department of Homeland Security hotline and left a threatening voicemail directed at Mayorkas.

In his plea, Carrier conceded that his actions were aimed at disrupting the official duties of Pelosi and Mayorkas.

U.S. Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey emphasized the significance of citizens' right to engage in public political discourse but underscored that threatening public officials is not safeguarded by the First Amendment. Ramsey stated, "This office will not tolerate behavior that crosses the line to criminal threats."

Apart from the prison sentence, Carrier has been mandated to undergo three years of supervised release post his incarceration. During this period, he is required to maintain distance from Pelosi and Secretary Mayorkas, attend mental health and substance abuse treatment, and adhere to other stipulations.

The case was prosecuted by the National Security and Cybercrime Section following a joint investigation by the FBI and the Secret Service.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp highlighted the detrimental impact of violent threats on elected officials and democratic processes. Tripp affirmed, "Today's sentence demonstrates that anyone who sends politically motivated threats of violence to government officials will be investigated by the FBI and held accountable."
