In a recent development within the Republican Party, Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG) has initiated a move to unseat the current House Speaker, Mike Johnson.

This move comes amidst a backdrop of internal strife within the party, a situation that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich attributes to Matt Gaetz's previous efforts to remove Kevin McCarthy from the Speaker's position.

Gingrich, during a conversation with Laura Ingraham on Fox News, expressed his disapproval of Gaetz's actions last October, which he believes have led to the current discord within the party. He linked Gaetz's push for McCarthy's removal to the Republican Party's recent struggles to pass substantial legislation, despite their slim majority in the House.

"We shouldn’t underestimate how bad what Matt Gaetz did was for the whole system. He unleashed the demons," Gingrich stated in his conversation with Ingraham. He further elaborated on the impact of Gaetz's actions, saying, "He went after somebody who had raised $480 million, had gained seats for three elections in a row. And had drove Kevin McCarthy out of office. And from that point on, it has been a disaster.”

Gingrich also expressed concern over the quality of legislation passed in the House since McCarthy's departure, arguing that the Democrats now wield more control. "Sooner or later you’re going to realize the bills have been worse since McCarthy was gone. The Democrats are in greater control. The hard-liners on the right have done nothing except make it worse,” he explained.

In light of these developments, Gingrich advocated for the election of Donald Trump in the upcoming November elections with a significant majority. He believes this could effectively counterbalance Democratic influence and bolster the Republican majority. He cited the Republicans' slim majority as "the best argument" for why the American public should elect Trump with a large majority.

Gingrich's comments come at a time when the current House Speaker, Mike Johnson, is facing calls for his removal. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene recently filed a motion to vacate Speaker Johnson, primarily citing Johnson’s handling of the $1.2 trillion spending bill that was recently approved by Congress and signed into law by President Biden.
