New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, has called off his planned visit to the southern border, citing safety concerns as the primary reason for his decision.

Mayor Adams, who is grappling with the strain of an influx of undocumented immigrants in his city, was scheduled to visit the area under the invitation of Sister Norma Pimentel, the Executive Director of the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in San Juan.

In a statement released on Saturday, mayoral spokeswoman Amaris Cockfield confirmed the cancellation of the trip to The New York Post. She stated, "As Lent draws to a close, our team was excited to stand with faith and humanitarian leaders who have dedicated their lives to serving the most needy among us, and we were eager to discuss our work in New York City and explore new ways to collaborate with leaders in cities across the country. But due to safety concerns at one of the cities we were going to visit in Mexico flagged by the U.S. Department of State, we have decided to pause this visit at this time."

This would have been Mayor Adams's second trip to the border. During his previous visit to the Mexican city of Puebla in October, he delivered a somewhat contradictory message. Adams was quoted as saying, "We are neighbors. We are familia. Mi casa es su casa. Your struggles are my struggles. There is no more room in New York. Our hearts are endless, but our resources are not. We don’t want to put people in congregate shelters. We don’t want people to think they will be employed."

Despite his frequent complaints about the continuous influx of immigrants into New York, Adams has not yet called on President Joe Biden to fully secure the border and halt the influx of migrants. Instead, he has attempted to encourage other regions of the country to share the responsibility.

Since President Biden took office in 2021, over 10 million migrants have entered the U.S. illegally. This figure surpasses the population of 36 states and continues to rise daily, potentially underestimating the actual numbers.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott's refusal to have his state bear the cost of Biden's open border policies has resulted in many immigrants being transported to so-called "sanctuary cities" like New York, Chicago, and Denver. In these cities, local taxpayers fund their food, accommodation, and healthcare.
