As the crisis in Haiti escalates, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken proactive measures to safeguard Floridians from a potential influx of Haitian refugees and criminal elements seeking to exploit the situation to violate U.S. immigration laws.

DeSantis has sanctioned state-led rescue missions to evacuate Americans from the region. According to his administration's spokespersons, the first flight is already en route to the United States. Additionally, he has deployed state resources to southern Florida to prevent a possible surge of refugees. In late February, officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) intercepted a boat carrying firearms, drugs, and night goggles, which the FWC labeled as a "human smuggling operation."

In a recent conversation with conservative talk show host Dana Loesch, DeSantis discussed the Haitian crisis. He suggested that Florida might transport the refugees to Martha's Vineyard if they couldn't be returned to Haiti or a South American country without clearance.

“We do have our transport program also that’s going to be operational. So, Haitians land in the Florida Keys, their next stop very well may be Martha’s Vineyard,” DeSantis said in the interview.

DeSantis emphasized the importance of Florida authorities intercepting vessels carrying Haitian migrants before they reach the state. He noted that repatriation is straightforward if they are apprehended at sea. However, if they land in Florida, he cannot send them back to Haiti without clearance.

“If you wanted to fly somebody to a South American country, wherever they’re from, it becomes a little bit more difficult because there, the federal government’s going to tell the host countries not to accept our plane,” he explained.

DeSantis previously sent two planes of illegal immigrants to Martha's Vineyard in the summer of 2022, which sparked outrage from critics who were not as welcoming of the illegal immigrants as they had claimed.

DeSantis' proposal to send Haitian refugees to Martha's Vineyard provoked Ayanna Pressley, a member of the progressive "Squad," who accused DeSantis of "exploiting vulnerable families" on Twitter.

Pressley's criticism of DeSantis' remarks is somewhat ironic. If Martha's Vineyard, a city and state that prides itself on welcoming and accommodating illegal immigrants, were to receive the Haitian refugees, wouldn't that be the most compassionate course of action?

However, DeSantis' message is clear: "Don't come here." Interestingly, despite her objections, Pressley appears to be echoing the same sentiment.

Democrats often make grandiose promises about providing safe harbor for illegal immigrants but rarely follow through. Giving people false hope is arguably one of the least compassionate and most exploitative actions, which is precisely what Pressley and her radical open borders colleagues are doing every time they discuss this issue.

Once again, Democrats are revealing their true colors.
