Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has stated that Haitian migrants who arrive in Florida with the aid of the federal government could be transported directly to Martha's Vineyard, a predominantly Democratic and affluent town in Massachusetts.

This statement was made during an interview with radio host Dana Loesch, amid rising fears that thousands, if not millions, of Haitians may attempt to illegally enter the United States via boat to Florida's coast.

DeSantis explained the challenges faced by Florida in dealing with such a situation. "The problem when you get a situation like Florida is they have people in our state and we want to fly them back say back Haiti, we have to get clearance in order to be able to do that," he said. He further noted that deporting individuals to South American countries can be more difficult, as the federal government may instruct these countries not to accept their planes.

The Governor expressed his willingness to assist in returning migrants who cross the border in Texas and Arizona. "I definitely think we could help put them back over the border if they come across in Texas and Arizona, so I’d be willing to help do that," he said. He added that the situation is somewhat different for a maritime state like Florida, hence the need to intercept the migrants before they reach the shores.

DeSantis further stated that if the migrants do manage to reach Florida, they could be transported to Martha's Vineyard, where former President Barack Obama owns a multi-million dollar property. "Although I will say this, we do have our transport program also that is going to be operational, so if Haitians land in the Florida Keys, their next stop very well may be Martha’s Vineyard," he added.

Haiti is currently in a state of effective anarchy following the collapse of its government and the territorial advance of various violent gangs. The U.S. has evacuated most of its embassy staff due to the deteriorating situation.

This would not be the first time that DeSantis has sent migrants to Martha's Vineyard. In September 2022, he dispatched two busloads of illegal immigrants to the liberal enclave, prompting local authorities to declare an "urgent humanitarian situation." The migrants were subsequently relocated.
