In a recent video interview streamed on YouTube, Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, revealed that he uses ketamine to enhance his mental health.

Musk candidly discussed his occasional struggles with depression, referring to it as a "negative chemical state" in his brain. He disclosed that he uses a "small amount once every other week" of ketamine to help manage these episodes.

"Ketamine is useful for getting one out of a negative frame of mind," Musk stated, characterizing his bouts of depression as "chemical tides" rather than "negative news." He also suggested that his use of ketamine has a positive impact on his business ventures. "From the standpoint of Wall Street, what matters is execution … From [the] investors' standpoint, if there is something I'm taking, I should keep taking it," he said.

Musk, who also owns the social media platform X, has previously shared his experiences with ketamine on the platform, hoping to provide help and insight to others. He emphasized that he obtains the drug through a prescription from a medical doctor and does not misuse it. "If you use too much ketamine, you can’t really get work done, and I have a lot of work," he added.

This is not the first time Musk has publicly discussed his use of ketamine. In a June 2023 post on X, he stated, "From what I’ve seen with friends, ketamine taken occasionally is a better option."

Ketamine, a hallucinogenic anesthetic, was first approved in 1970 for medical and veterinary use. Since then, it has been found to have significant effects on the brain, particularly for those suffering from depression, according to Dr. William Prueitt, director of the Ketamine Treatment Program at Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut.

"There’s growing evidence that ketamine can be very effective for patients with depression who have not responded to other treatments," Prueitt told Fox News Digital. He explained that ketamine is best suited for patients with moderate to severe depression who haven’t responded to other types of treatments or therapy.

"Ketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants — it targets different neurotransmitters in the brain," Prueitt noted. "That is one proposed reason why it’s often successful where other medications are not."

Ketamine can be administered via nasal spray (esketamine) or IV infusions (ketamine). "Ketamine provides rapid relief of symptoms, sometimes in as little as a few weeks," said Prueitt. "Patients can experience improved mood, renewed optimism and reduced negative thoughts."

However, Prueitt cautioned that while ketamine is generally "very safe" when administered in an "appropriate treatment setting" with an experienced medical team, there can be risks if it’s used in unsupervised circumstances. "Patients should not self-medicate and should only receive ketamine treatments after an appropriate psychiatric evaluation and medical screening," he added.
