In a chilling revelation, court records have unveiled a plot by an Iraqi resident of Ohio to smuggle ISIS sympathizers into the United States with the intent of assassinating former President George W. Bush.

The conspirators, according to the records, were individuals "who do not care if they are killed during the mission."

The mastermind behind this plot, Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, 53, held the former president responsible for the death of numerous Iraqis and the devastation of Iraq during the "Operation of Iraqi Freedom." Shihab, who had previously pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to terrorists, was sentenced in February to over 14 years in prison.

During the war, Shihab had aided al Qaeda as a gun runner, smuggling weapons from Syria into Iraq and arranging explosive-laden vehicles along routes frequented by Americans, as per federal court documents.

The plot involved two former Iraqi intelligence agents tasked with the actual assassination, while Shihab planned to survey the former president's Texas residence and manage travel logistics. Shihab intended to smuggle the Iraqi nationals across the U.S.-Mexican border for a hefty sum, oblivious to the fact that he was conspiring with an unnamed informant, referred to as "CS1" in court papers.

In recorded conversations with the FBI's confidential source, Shihab confessed his desire to participate in the attack and assassination of the former president, stating that he would be "proud" to sacrifice his life. His plan included smuggling at least seven assassins, all Iraqi nationals, across the U.S.-Mexican border for thousands of dollars each.

In the fall of 2021, Shihab believed he had successfully smuggled an ISIS member into the U.S. for $40,000. However, in reality, the individual was fictitious, and the interaction was orchestrated under the FBI's direction, according to federal Ohio prosecutors.

The court documents do not reveal what initially drew federal law enforcement's attention to Shihab or alerted them to the plot. However, the complaint details several recorded meetings between Shihab and "CS1" from April 2021 to May 2022.

In February 2022, Shihab traveled with "CS1" to Dallas, where he recorded the driveway leading to Bush's home and the surrounding area, including the George W. Bush Institute. The FBI's informant dissuaded Shihab from sending the videos to the assassins, warning that they could be intercepted by the U.S. government.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the former president remained unfazed. "President Bush has all the confidence in the world in the U.S. Secret Service and our law enforcement and intelligence communities," Freddy Ford, Bush's chief of staff, told The Guardian following Shihab's arrest in May 2022.

Shihab was arrested by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in May 2022 and charged in federal court with attempting to provide material support to terrorists. After pleading guilty last March, he was sentenced in February to 178 months in prison. Following his prison term, Shihab is likely to be deported but will remain under supervised release for life.

Shihab arrived in the U.S. in September 2020 on a visitor visa and held various jobs, including positions in markets and restaurants in Columbus, Ohio, and Indianapolis. In March 2021, he applied for asylum with U.S. citizenship, a claim that was under review at the time of his arrest. Shihab also procured fraudulent divorce papers from his wife in Iraq to establish a sham marriage with a U.S. citizen to secure immigration status.
