Chicago's administration, led by Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson, initiated the eviction of unauthorized immigrants from city shelters on Sunday.

The move is part of an effort to decrease the strain on resources caused by the nearly 11,000 individuals currently housed in 23 shelters across the city. The New York Times reported that 34 people were evicted on Sunday, with plans to gradually remove a total of 2,000 individuals by the end of April.

Mayor Johnson, discussing the evictions, stated, “By encouraging resettlement while also providing case-specific extensions with a focus on health and safety, we are advancing a pathway to stability and self-sufficiency.”

The city's decision comes amidst a significant surge in unauthorized immigrants, with over 37,000 arrivals recorded since August 2022. However, the eviction strategy has raised concerns about the potential increase in homeless immigrants on the city's streets if no measures are taken to investigate and deport those residing illegally.

Annie Gomberg, a representative from the volunteer group People’s Shelter Response, expressed concerns to the Times, stating, “There is a lot of fear there will be people in the streets.”

Chicago's approach mirrors that of other major US cities grappling with similar issues. Denver, for instance, recently announced the closure of four shelters to ease budgetary pressures, a move expected to save the city an estimated $60 million.

Jon Ewing, a spokesman for Denver Human Services, explained their strategy, saying, “What we have been doing actively is working with nonprofits day and night to help families secure housing.”

However, he acknowledged the limitations of their efforts, adding, “But we don’t have resources to do this forever, and the nonprofits don’t either. It’s very, very important to keep the numbers down.” Denver's strategy also involves urging rental property owners to prioritize renting to unauthorized immigrants, despite concerns about their ability to pay rent.
