According to the IDF, Faiq Mabhouh, who was said to have been "operating and advancing terrorist activity" from the hospital, was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with Israeli troops attempting to apprehend him. Mabhouh held the position of head of operations within Hamas’s internal security force, with a primary role in coordinating various Hamas units and quelling dissent within the Gaza Strip.
This incident is not the first instance of Hamas utilizing a hospital for its operations. Earlier this year, U.S. intelligence confirmed that Hamas had been using the same hospital as a military command center, overseeing its forces, holding hostages, and stockpiling weapons. The IDF's investigation in November revealed further evidence of Hamas’s activities within the hospital premises, including the presence of a significant terror tunnel beneath the facility.

In a separate development in December, Ahmad Kahalot, the director of Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital, admitted to being a senior Hamas figure and implicated 16 hospital staff members as Hamas affiliates. Kahalot disclosed that Hamas had been concealing "military and civilian officials within the hospital" to shield them from potential attacks, criticizing Hamas leaders for their perceived cowardice in seeking refuge in clandestine locations while endangering innocent civilians.
