In a recent development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has secured another term in office, marking his fifth tenure.

The election, which lacked any substantial opposition, saw Putin garnering 87% of the votes, as reported by Russia's election commission.

Celebrating his victory early on Monday, Putin hailed it as a testament to the Russian people's "trust" in his leadership. He addressed the nation after the polls closed, stating, "Of course, we have lots of tasks ahead. But I want to make it clear for everyone: When we were consolidated, no one has ever managed to frighten us, to suppress our will and our self-conscience. They failed in the past and they will fail in the future."

The Putin administration has been notably successful in quelling opposition voices, particularly in the backdrop of its invasion of Ukraine. Notably, Alexei Navalny, the activist who was considered Putin's most formidable opponent, passed away in a Russian prison last month.

At 71, Putin has been at the helm of Russia for nearly a quarter of a century. With this victory, he has secured another six-year term. The election commission reported that Putin received over 76 million votes, setting a new record.

The election results were met with skepticism and indifference in the West. U.S. President Biden has yet to comment on the election. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, however, was more vocal, stating, "This is not what free and fair elections look like."

On the final day of the election, protests were held outside polling stations and Russian embassies worldwide. These gatherings were called for by allies of Navalny and his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, who cast her vote in her late husband's name at the Russian embassy in Berlin.

Addressing Navalny's death for the first time on Monday, Putin revealed that he had backed a plan to release him in a prisoner exchange scheduled to occur just days after his death. He commented, "It happens. There is nothing you can do about it. It's life."

In the aftermath of his victory, Putin shifted the focus to U.S. election issues, criticizing the legal troubles of former President Trump and claiming that "the whole world is laughing" at the U.S.
