Vice President Kamala Harris is set to bring the contentious issue of reproductive rights to the forefront as the Biden-Harris administration gears up for a re-election bid, capitalizing on the robust opposition to recent conservative triumphs ahead of the November face-off with Donald Trump.

Ms. Harris is scheduled to visit Minnesota on Thursday, where she is anticipated to make an appearance at a Planned Parenthood clinic that offers abortion services. However, the specifics of the visit are being kept more confidential than usual for a campaign stop featuring the vice president. The impending visit was initially disclosed by NBC News a day prior to the event, with the information not credited to any White House spokesperson but to sources familiar with Ms. Harris's itinerary.

This visit is believed to be the first instance of a sitting president or vice president visiting a clinic that provides abortion services.

As per White House guidelines, Ms. Harris is expected to address the press during her visit. Media reports suggest that she might interact with patients and healthcare professionals at the Planned Parenthood facility. However, it remains uncertain whether cameras will be allowed during her time inside the clinic, and the official White House press guidance does not even mention that the visit will occur at a clinic. Privacy concerns for both patients and doctors are a significant factor, given the clinic's nature and the propensity of right-wing groups to target women who seek abortion care and the doctors who provide it.

In contrast to other states with stricter abortion restrictions, Planned Parenthood operates over ten locations across Minnesota. The vice president's visit, which will also include a more conventional campaign stop, will take place in the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St Paul, although the exact clinic to be visited remains undisclosed.

Ms. Harris and President Biden have embarked on an intensive campaign schedule throughout March, possibly aiming to build momentum for their re-election bid as adversary Donald Trump's legal troubles and associated financial burdens accumulate. The duo is slated to visit North Carolina in the coming days, while Mr. Biden was in another swing state, Wisconsin, on Wednesday.

Reproductive rights are poised to be a pivotal campaign issue for Democrats in the 2024 elections, following the party's successful strategy of focusing on the issue in the 2022 midterms. This approach resulted in a slight expansion of the Democratic majority in the Senate, while Republicans managed to secure only a thin, unstable majority in the House of Representatives, which has since dwindled further into single digits. Some of the top-performing Democrats that year were candidates from swing states like Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer, who secured re-election while staunchly defending reproductive freedoms.

President Biden himself criticized the Supreme Court's decision to overturn abortion protections established in Roe v Wade during his state of the union address last week. Notably, he did so while the Court's justices were present in the chamber to hear his remarks.
