In a recent revelation, data from the Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) indicates that a mere 834 Venezuelans were deported in the fiscal year 2023, despite over 335,000 encounters at the border.

This comes amidst a nationwide crime wave, allegedly perpetrated by illegal immigrants from Venezuela, which has sent shockwaves across the country.

The Biden administration, however, finds itself in a bind, unable to deport many of these illegal aliens back to their homeland. This is a direct result of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's refusal to accept deportation flights from the US and Mexico. Maduro's decision, a response to heightened economic sanctions, effectively nullified an agreement established in October.

The spotlight has been on Venezuelan illegal immigrants, who have been implicated in violent crimes that have made national headlines over the past few months. These individuals were among the more than 335,000 border encounters last year that were recorded but never resulted in deportation. Critics argue that had these individuals been deported, the heinous crimes they committed would have been averted.

One such incident that has garnered significant attention involves Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan national accused of murdering 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. Ibarra, along with his wife and her 5-year-old son, entered the US in September 2022 through El Paso, Texas. His wife revealed that they married to consolidate their asylum cases and were subsequently transported to New York City via bus.

While in New York, Ibarra was apprehended on child endangerment charges, but the case was dismissed by a Manhattan judge. Following his separation from his wife, Ibarra relocated to Georgia to live with his brother, also an illegal immigrant. It was here that he allegedly murdered Laken Riley during her routine jog near campus. Investigations later revealed that both Jose and his brother were active members of the notorious Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.

The NYPD has attributed dozens of robberies and instances of terrorizing residents in New York to the Tren de Aragua gang. Two of its members were apprehended following a brutal attack on NYPD officers in Times Square in January that went viral. As of last month, the gang is allegedly responsible for over 60 robberies, according to police reports.

In another incident, a 15-year-old Venezuelan illegal immigrant was arrested for shooting at a security guard in Times Square, with the bullet striking a Brazilian tourist in the leg. Furthermore, Chicago police apprehended four illegal immigrants, all Venezuelan nationals, last month for allegedly physically assaulting and robbing a man on a CTA train in Chicago, as reported by Fox News.

Following the reimposition of sanctions on Venezuela's gold industry by the United States on February 13, Maduro has refused to cooperate with deportations. This has made it impossible to remove some of the country's violent criminals currently residing in the United States.

Despite these alarming incidents, only a small fraction of the Venezuelan migrants entering the US unlawfully have been deported by the Biden administration. ICE data reveals that there were 830 Venezuelan encounters at the US border in the fiscal year 2023, but this figure does not account for the Venezuelan nationals who evaded capture. Border authorities report encounters with 335,000 Venezuelan citizens.

Of these, over 201,000 were detained by Border Patrol officers for illegal entry into the country. The remaining individuals were processed at ports of entry, such as CBP One app paroles into the United States, according to Fox News.

In response to these developments, the House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act last week by a vote of 251 to 170, with all dissenting votes coming from Democrats. If enacted, this legislation would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act, compelling the Department of Homeland Security to detain anyone who entered the country unlawfully and is implicated in any burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting offense.
