President Biden's State of the Union address last week did not result in a surge in his approval ratings, according to recent polls.

The President's approval rating, which stood at 40 percent in a Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted before the address, dropped to 39 percent in a subsequent survey released by the same entities on Tuesday.

In a hypothetical 2024 match-up conducted prior to the State of the Union, Biden and former President Trump were statistically tied, with 45 percent and 44 percent respectively. The latest poll, however, shows Trump leading with 46 percent, while Biden trails slightly behind at 44 percent.

Other polls also indicate that the President's address to Congress did not significantly shift public opinion. FiveThirtyEight's calculation of Biden's approval rating was just over 37 percent on Tuesday. On March 6, the day before the State of the Union, the ABC News pollster had him at just under 38 percent.

Despite the low approval ratings, Democrats lauded the State of the Union address, describing it as energetic and a demonstration of Biden's readiness for another term in office. However, less than 30 percent of respondents in the Yahoo News/YouGov poll believed Biden was fit enough to serve a second term, a figure that remained unchanged from the previous survey. Over 50 percent of respondents described the President as "mostly passive" in his role, a slight decrease from 54 percent in the previous poll.

This week, the President is embarking on a tour of battleground states following his State of the Union address, with stops in Wisconsin and Michigan. Biden officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday night after receiving enough delegates, setting the stage for a potential 2020 rematch between him and Trump in the general election.
