In a striking revelation, more than one in five adults from Generation Z identified as LGBTQ+ in 2023, marking a significant increase from less than a decade ago.

According to a poll conducted by Gallup, 22.3 percent of Gen Zers identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, with over 15 percent identifying as bisexual. This trend indicates that each successive generation is approximately twice as likely as the previous one to identify as LGBTQ+.

While only one in ten millennials identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, the rate is significantly higher among Gen Z adults. This shift has sparked debates among psychologists, with some attributing it to the influence of social media, where young people may be influenced to deviate from traditional relationship and social norms. Others argue that it could be a result of increased acceptance, allowing young people to feel more comfortable expressing their true identities.

The poll also revealed that nearly eight percent of US adults now identify as LGBTQ+, a significant increase from 5.6 percent four years ago and 3.5 percent in 2012, when Gallup first began tracking sexual orientation and trans identity. Women were more likely than men to identify as LGBTQ+, with 8.5 percent of women identifying as such, compared to 4.7 percent of men. Bisexuality was the most common form of LGBTQ+ identification among women, while men were equally likely to identify as bisexual or gay.

"Young adults are driving the increases in LGBTQ+ identification, and the proportion of them identifying as one of them will likely rise over the coming years," Gallup reported. The organization further projected that if current trends persist, the proportion of LGBTQ+ identifiers could exceed 10% of U.S. adults within the next three decades.

Older generations, however, were less likely to identify as LGBTQ+. The percentage dropped to less than five percent among Generation X and two percent among baby boomers. Gallup noted that bisexuality is the most common LGBTQ+ status among Generation Z, millennials, and Generation X, while older generations were more likely to identify as gay or lesbian.

The survey also highlighted a significant shift in Gen Z's attitudes towards religion and the Republican Party, with many turning away from both. This shift could be attributed to various factors, including the influence of social media and increased public awareness and acceptance of diverse sexual orientations.

A 2022 survey from the Trevor Project, an organization advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, found that 62 percent of adults would be comfortable if their child identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Myeshia Price, PhD, the Director of Research Science at The Trevor Project, attributed this to increased access to education and representation around LGBTQ+ identities. "While we have miles to go as a society, it is important to note that both understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ people has grown significantly in the last few decades," she said.

In a similar vein, 72 percent of all adults expressed confidence in their ability to understand and support their child if they identified as transgender and/or nonbinary. Amit Paley, Trevor Project CEO and Executive Director, found this encouraging, stating, "Knowing how vital a parent’s love and support is for suicide prevention, it’s encouraging to see a majority of adults express comfort with having LGBTQ+ kids."
