The current state of affairs in Haiti is beyond exaggeration.

The nation is in a political limbo, with Prime Minister Ariel Henry unable to return to the country amidst escalating violence and disorder.

He is under immense pressure, both domestically and internationally, to step down from his position.

Mainstream media headlines paint a grim picture, suggesting that Haiti is teetering on the edge of collapse, spiraling into chaos, and on the verge of a significant humanitarian crisis.

The armed individuals who have seized control of the capital, Port-au-Prince, are still referred to as 'gang members.' However, they have essentially transformed into a rebel force presenting themselves as an alternative to the government.

There is a growing call for foreign intervention in Haiti, but the possibility of peacekeeping seems to be off the table. Any intervening force will have to wrest control by force.

The likely outcome appears to be the deposition of Prime Minister Henry. But the question remains: what comes next?

The Interior Ministry was set on fire overnight, and several police stations and government offices in the capital were attacked.

According to Bloomberg, "Local media reported intense fighting in downtown Port-au-Prince, as more than a week of violence aimed at toppling the government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry reached a new peak.”

Caribbean Community Caricom Chairman Mohamed Irfaan Ali expressed his concern, stating, “We are acutely aware of the urgent need for consensus. We have impressed on the respective parties that time is not on their side in agreeing to the way forward. From our reports, the situation on the ground remains dire, and is of serious concern to us.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Henry, who should be leading the resistance against the gang rebels, is unable to return to the country. According to reports, "Henry, who left Haiti on Feb. 25 to build support for a multinational security force led by Kenya, has been unable to return to the country, as gangs have attacked the capital and closed the main airport. The Biden administration has called on Henry to support a transition of power.”

The last update from Henry indicated that he was in Puerto Rico, facing mounting pressure to resign and pave the way for a transitional government.

The armed gang rebels have launched a large-scale attack on multiple government buildings. ABC News reported, “The attack was coordinated and swift, with different groups simultaneously targeting multiple government buildings including the Presidential Palace, the Interior Ministry, and a police headquarters for Haiti’s western district which includes Port-au-Prince.”

There were reports of intense gunfire and large explosions. Preliminary numbers suggest that around a dozen gang fighters were killed, though this figure has not been fully confirmed. No police casualties have been reported so far.
