In a recent development that has stirred controversy, former US President Donald Trump held a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who subsequently endorsed Trump.

This event has drawn sharp criticism from the current US President, Joe Biden.

The Hungarian Prime Minister made a trip to Florida to meet Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort last Friday. The Trump campaign reported that the two leaders deliberated on a broad spectrum of issues impacting both Hungary and the United States, with a particular emphasis on the critical need for robust and secure borders to safeguard each nation's sovereignty.

Trump lauded Orbán, stating, "There’s nobody that’s better, smarter or a better leader than Viktor Orban. He’s fantastic. He’s a noncontroversial figure because he said ‘This is the way it’s gonna be,’ and that’s the end of it. He’s the boss."

Following their meeting, Orbán endorsed Trump, asserting that the former president is among the few global leaders capable of fostering peace. "It was a pleasure to visit President [Donald Trump] today. We need leaders in the world who are respected and can bring peace," Orbán expressed on social media. "He is one of them! Come back and bring us peace, Mr. President!"

Orbán, who has held office since 2010, is a proponent of what he terms "illiberal democracy." His governance has drawn criticism from international human rights observers, including the U.S. State Department. He has faced intense scrutiny for leading an increasingly autocratic regime in Hungary, with allegations of curtailing minority rights, seizing control of the judiciary and media, and manipulating the country's electoral system to retain power, as reported by The Associated Press.

President Biden, during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania, condemned the meeting, portraying both Trump and Orbán as adversaries to democracy. "You know who he’s meeting with today down in Mar-a-Lago? Orbán of Hungary, who’s stated flatly that he doesn’t thinks democracy works, he’s looking for dictatorship," Biden claimed. He further added, "I see a future where we defend democracy, not diminish it."
