A tragic incident unfolded on Friday as a helicopter, transporting National Guard and Border Patrol personnel over the U.S. southern border, crashed, resulting in three fatalities.

National Guard General Daniel Hokanson shared this somber news in a statement.

The fatal crash took place during the afternoon near Rio Grande, Texas, while the UH-72 Lakota helicopter was engaged in aviation operations for a federal government border security mission. The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation.

Expressing his condolences, General Hokanson conveyed, “The National Guard family sends our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, friends & colleagues of the two Army National Guard Soldiers and the U.S. Border Patrol officer killed in today’s helicopter crash in Texas.”

Despite the tragedy, one soldier survived the crash but sustained serious injuries, as confirmed in the statement. General Hokanson emphasized, “We mourn these heartbreaking deaths. They are a tragic loss beyond words. We pray for the speedy recovery of a third Guard Soldier who was seriously injured.”

The Starr County Sheriff’s Office announced its involvement in the search efforts following the helicopter crash, as detailed in a Facebook post.

The ill-fated helicopter was part of Operation Lone Star, spearheaded by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott to fortify the state’s border, as reported by The Associated Press.

According to federal data, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has encountered over 750,000 illegal immigrants at the southern border in fiscal year 2024.
