The Fulton County Board of Ethics in Georgia has cancelled its scheduled hearing of complaints against District Attorney Fani Willis, citing lack of jurisdiction.

The board was set to review two complaints against Willis, who is a co-defendant in the Georgia election interference case involving former President Trump. The complaints were filed after allegations emerged that Willis had an inappropriate relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she appointed to prosecute Trump. However, the board updated its meeting agenda to exclude these complaints just days before the meeting was due to take place.

During the meeting on Thursday, Chairman Daraka Satcher announced that the board did not have jurisdiction over the complaints as Willis is a state constitutional officer, not a county official, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "The Fulton County Code of Ethics, our code of ethics, only applies to county officers and employees," Satcher stated. He further clarified that the Georgia State Ethics Commission is the appropriate body to review the complaints against Willis.

In the previous year, Willis indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants, including Michael Roman, a GOP political operative who initially filed motions claiming Willis financially benefited from her alleged romantic involvement with Wade. A state judge is currently considering evidence related to Willis' purported misconduct and the potential disqualification of her and her team from the case.

Simultaneously, state legislators have established a special Senate committee with subpoena power to investigate the allegations against the district attorney. The complaints lodged with the ethics board are distinct from the disqualification proceedings and the state Senate investigation.

Gregory Mantell and Steven Kramer filed the two complaints in January and February respectively, accusing Willis of multiple ethics violations. Mantell, the founder of the Substack blog Investigative News Service, filed his complaint on January 27. According to Newsweek, Mantell alleges that the district attorney's office wrongly denied his request for expense reports for 2021-2023 and all contracts and payments made to Wade during those years. He also requested records related to $14.6 million in awards from the Department of Justice.

Kramer's extensive complaint raises questions about Wade's hiring, the alleged affair, Wade's compensation, money spent on dates and trips, the potential creation of a hostile workplace environment, and whether taxpayer dollars paid to Wade could have been used more effectively, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. "The extra resources and financial costs for the court and the district attorney’s office, both paid for by Fulton County taxpayers like me, are to deal with this improper relationship," Kramer wrote in his complaint filed on February 14.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a fervent Trump supporter, also stated that she filed two ethics complaints against Willis and was anticipating the hearing. If the Fulton County ethics board had found Willis in violation of the county ethics code, she would have been liable for a $1,000 fine. However, since the board determined that Willis is outside its jurisdiction, she will not face any reprimand.
