In a recent interview, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed her disappointment over Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

Pelosi referred to McConnell's endorsement as a "sad, professional tragedy," considering their past relationship and the Senate's near removal of Trump from office due to his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Pelosi and McConnell, despite their political differences, have found common ground on several issues over the years. However, Pelosi expressed her dismay over McConnell's decision to support Trump, especially after the Senate was on the brink of convicting the former president.

"For him to know how bad the president's predecessor was on all of this, and then come to the conclusion that he would endorse him, when we thought he was going to convict him, the word was he was close to conviction, and now he's endorsing," Pelosi said during her appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Pelosi further expressed her disappointment, stating, "It's really very, very sad. And it's a sad conclusion to a career of strategic — again mostly we didn't agree, but I was respectful of the view that he brought forth and how we could work together." She added, "It's really … in my view, a sad, professional tragedy that he had to come around."

McConnell's endorsement of Trump comes after his announcement last month that he would step down from Senate GOP leadership. This decision followed a period of over three years during which the two had not spoken due to differences.

Pelosi argued that McConnell was fully aware of Trump's guilt in the Capitol attack, a point she claimed the Kentucky Republican had even addressed on the Senate floor. "He knew that what was happening was wrong in terms of this beautiful Capitol being assaulted but not just the physical building, what happens here, our Constitution, our ability to honor our oath of office to have a peaceful transfer of power," Pelosi said. "He even spoke to that eloquently on the floor, but then he wouldn't allow a bipartisan commission to be formed."

Pelosi concluded her remarks by questioning McConnell's motives, stating, "Why would he do such a thing? Perhaps he'll explain it to the world."

McConnell's endorsement of Trump also coincides with the suspension of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's White House bid. Haley was Trump's only remaining challenger in the race, and her withdrawal now clears the path for Trump to secure the GOP nomination. Despite pressure from other Republicans, Haley has not endorsed Trump, insisting instead that he would have to "earn the votes" of her supporters.
