During President Biden's State of the Union address, the father of a fallen U.S. soldier in Afghanistan, who perished in the tumultuous withdrawal, was allegedly detained after vocally referencing "Abbey Gate" and "13 Marines."

Steve Nikoui, father of Lance Corporal Kareem Nikoui, was reportedly charged with a misdemeanor.

"Abbey Gate" alludes to the site of the ISIS-K suicide bombing that claimed the lives of 13 American service members and 170 Afghan civilians.

President Biden had disclosed his withdrawal strategy in April 2021, initiating troop pullouts on May 1. Subsequently, the U.S. military vacated Bagram Air Base in July, abandoning military resources estimated at 7 billion dollars.

The Taliban's takeover of Kabul on August 15 prompted Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to seek refuge in Tajikistan.

Following the withdrawal, the Republican members of the Foreign Affairs Committee issued a scathing report in 2021 denouncing Biden's choices. Tragically, on August 26, 2021, an ISIS-K suicide bomber outside Hamid Karzai International Airport claimed the lives of 13 Marines, including Nikoui's son.

In a poignant gesture, President Donald Trump convened a dinner in late August 2023 for the Gold Star families affected by the attack, with Nikoui in attendance, as reported by The Spectator.

The identities of the 13 Americans lost during the flawed Afghan withdrawal are undisclosed at this time.

In the early hours of Friday, Nikoui was reported to have been released.
