Court documents have unveiled that Diego Ibarra, the brother of the illegal immigrant suspected of murdering Laken Riley, may be affiliated with the notorious Venezuelan gang, Tren de Arugua.

As reported by WSBTV, a motion has been filed to detain Diego Ibarra, whose brother, Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan national, is the prime suspect in the murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at the University of Georgia. Riley was tragically killed while jogging on the university campus on February 22.

Jose Ibarra was apprehended and charged with murder the day following the incident. Diego Ibarra was also taken into custody after authorities discovered he had presented them with a counterfeit green card. Diego is slated for a probable cause and detention hearing on Thursday, during which the U.S. Attorney’s Office will present a motion for his detention in Macon.

The recently disclosed documents obtained by WSBTV reveal that after Riley's murder, law enforcement disseminated images of a man, considered a suspect, donning a baseball cap with an Adidas logo. The subsequent day, officers spotted a man wearing an identical hat in the Argo apartments' parking lot. This man identified himself as Diego Ibarra and was taken into custody when he produced a counterfeit green card upon the officers' request for identification.

The court documents further detail Diego's extensive criminal history, dating back to his initial attempt to enter the U.S. in April 2023. He was arrested for DUI and shoplifting but was subsequently released. Jose Ibarra was present with Diego during one of the shoplifting incidents at a Walmart.

Prosecutors believe that Diego is likely a member of the Venezuelan prison gang, Tren de Arugua. This suspicion is based on Diego's distinctive tattoos, including a five-pointed crown, five-pointed stars, and a teardrop. Diego's social media posts, where he is seen displaying unique hand gestures associated with the gang and wearing Chicago Bulls gear (a common identifier among gang members), further substantiate this claim.

Images also show Diego brandishing firearms, a violation of his non-US citizen status. It remains unclear whether Jose Ibarra is also affiliated with the Tren de Arugua gang.

Jose Ibarra entered the U.S. in September with his wife and her five-year-old son. The family sought asylum and were relocated to New York. Jose was previously arrested for child endangerment, but the record was sealed following his release. After separating from his wife, Jose relocated to Georgia, where his brother resided.

President Joe Biden, during his first term in office, expanded the asylum process, allowing asylum seekers to remain in the U.S. while awaiting trial, often several years later.
