Libs Of TikTok Exposes The Dark Underbelly Of Philadelphia's "Gayborhood"

The funds, earmarked for a renovation project under the Department of Housing and Urban Development, were intended to transform the existing Community Center into a fully accessible, inclusive, and welcoming space for all individuals. However, the grant was withdrawn following a controversy stirred up by the social media account, Libs of TikTok.

The controversy arose when Libs of TikTok highlighted some of the center's activities, including an "improvisational interactive theater night focusing on ontological deconstruction of the political theory concepts of Contract and Domination," which involves elements of fetish and BDSM. The center also hosts The Aviary, described as Philadelphia's "friendliest and longest running kink and fetish party," and a monthly "Play All Day" party for individuals aged 18 and over interested in BDSM, kink, and fetish.

Following the exposure of these activities, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman withdrew his support for the grant, leading to its removal from the latest minibus bill in Congress. In a letter to the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Fetterman's office requested the removal of the project from the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bill.

Fetterman, in a statement to The Advocate, claimed the grant was withdrawn "without his input," and suggested that the conservative social media account's accusations played a role in the decision. "I wasn't part of that decision. It wasn't my personal decision to do that," Fetterman said. He also expressed surprise that "Democratic values and priorities are dictated by Libs of TikTok."

Despite the controversy, Fetterman defended the center, stating, "The William Way LGBT Community Center has been doing critical work in Philadelphia for decades. I do not believe that we should penalize this center based on events that are entirely legal among consenting adults."

The center's "Rules of Play" explicitly state that "sex and/or penetration is not allowed."
