Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs faced backlash on Monday after vetoing SB1231, a bill aimed at criminalizing illegal border crossings in the state.

The governor dismissed the bill as "anti-immigrant legislation," a move that drew sharp criticism from the Border Patrol Union (BPU) and other conservative figures.

The BPU, which represents thousands of agents grappling with the border crisis, expressed its disapproval via a statement. "Arresting illegal aliens who crash the border...illegally...is deemed 'anti-immigrant' by Arizona Gov Katie 'Veto' Hobbs," the union said. "Let that sink in for a moment."

Tech mogul Elon Musk also weighed in on the issue, suggesting that political motivations were at play. "Politicians will not expel likely future voters," Musk said. "Just a matter of incentives."

In a video released on Monday, Hobbs defended her decision to veto the bill. "Anti-immigrant legislation to score cheap political points has no place in our state," she argued. "This bill does not secure our border. On the contrary, it will be harmful for communities and business in our state, and a burden for law enforcement personnel."

While acknowledging the "frustration" felt by Arizonans over the Biden administration's handling of the border crisis, Hobbs insisted that SB1231 was "not the solution."

Republican State Senator Janae Shamp, who sponsored the bill, was among those who condemned Hobbs' decision. "The Legislature did its job to protect our citizens, but Governor Hobbs failed to do hers," Shamp said. "Vetoing the Arizona Border Invasion Act is a prime example of the chaos Hobbs is unleashing in our state while perpetuating this open border crisis as Biden's accomplice."

Shamp further argued that the veto disregarded the needs of law enforcement and the safety of Arizonans. "Our local, county, and state law enforcement officers are pleading for help, and they support this legislation to protect our citizens. Their blood, sweat, and tears shed while trying to keep our communities safe from the staggering number of border-related crimes hitting our state will not be in vain ... This veto is a slap in the face to them, Arizona's victims of border-related crimes, and other citizens who will inevitably feel the wrath of this border invasion in one way, shape, or form at the hands of Hobbs and Biden."
