As the 2024 election draws near, President Joe Biden is reportedly urging his aides to allow him to present a more authentic version of himself to the American public, according to insiders who spoke to The New York Times (NYT).

Amid concerns about his age, the President and his team are contemplating a strategy that would enable Biden to interact more frequently with the American people, a move that would involve getting him out of Washington, D.C., to engage in direct experiences with voters and to increase his social media presence.

Democratic Delaware Senator Chris Coons expressed his support for this approach, telling The NYT, "I have been saying for several months to the campaign, 'Please, let him be Joe Biden,' and so have many others."

In a recent social media clip, Biden responded to a video of former President Donald Trump comparing himself to the late Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny. Rob Flaherty, a senior advisor to the president, confirmed to The NYT that the idea for the video originated with Biden himself. "That came from his brain," Flaherty stated. He also revealed that Biden often rewrites his own tweets and occasionally improvises in videos, adding, "He's got more demands than I am sometimes prepared to keep up with."

While the White House insists that the initiative to get Biden out of the capital is aimed at connecting with voters rather than addressing concerns about his age, aides have indicated that the President plans to address questions about his fitness for office during his State of the Union address. They suggest that Biden will use his age as a means to underscore his extensive experience and accomplishments throughout his political career.

In an effort to increase Biden's visibility, particularly among younger demographics, social media "content creators" have been scheduled to meet with the President at campaign stops. White House spokesman Andrew Bates told The NYT, "We have always known that the most effective way to reach the American people is when they can hear President Biden make his case directly and authentically."

Throughout his presidency, Biden has favored social media over traditional press conferences, as reported by The Washington Post. Data from the University of California at Santa Barbara's American Presidency Project shows that as of January 20 of his fourth year in office, Biden has held an average of 11 press conferences per year, the lowest average since former President Ronald Reagan's tenure from 1981 to 1989.

Historian Barbara Perry, co-chair of the Presidential Oral History Program at the University of Virginia's Miller Center, suggested a correlation between the age of presidents and their preference for fewer press conferences. She told the Daily Caller, "I think it's more than coincidental that you have these two presidents with an aging factor... I do think it's more than coincidental that oftentimes as these presidents get older, they want to do these kinds of pressers less."

Perry further explained that older presidents may find it more challenging to respond immediately to the press's probing questions, which can sometimes be hostile or pointed. She concluded, "I just think that's part and parcel of what happens when you have older presidents... to be on the hair trigger and be able to respond immediately... and ask presidents to explain what they're doing and why they're doing things and to be controversial."
