During a recent episode of "60 Minutes," host Scott Pelley engaged in a heated exchange with the co-founders of Moms for Liberty, a conservative organization established in 2021.

The discussion centered around the controversial presence of sexually explicit books in American schools.

Tina Descovich, one of the co-founders of Moms for Liberty, expressed her admiration for educators, stating, "We love teachers. My children have had the best teachers. I've had the greatest teachers that have influenced and impacted me." However, she also voiced concerns about the presence of "rogue teachers in America's classrooms right now."

Tiffany Justice, the other co-founder, emphasized the organization's stance on education versus indoctrination. "Parents send their children to school to be educated, not indoctrinated into ideology," she said. When Pelley inquired about the nature of the alleged indoctrination, Descovich responded, "Let's just say children in America cannot read."

Throughout the segment, Pelley accused the co-founders of evading his questions and resorting to talking points. He challenged them, asking, "What ideology are the children being indoctrinated into? What is your fear?" Justice responded by highlighting parents' concerns about the premature introduction of sexual content to their children. "I think the parents' fears are realized," she said. "They're looking at these books where sexual discussions are happening with their children at younger and younger ages."

Justice provided examples of the explicit content found in some books, a point Pelley narrated over, stating, "Tiffany Justice read from sexually explicit books written for older teens but found in a few lower schools." He went on to accuse Moms for Liberty of using "outrage politics" to amplify their concerns, suggesting they were turning isolated incidents into a widespread conspiracy to sexualize children.

The debate over explicit content in school books has gained national attention, with books like "Gender Queer" being challenged by parents and at school board meetings across the country. Critics have labeled the graphic novel as "pornographic" due to its explicit depictions of oral sex and masturbation.

The controversy has led to legislative action in some states. In West Virginia, for instance, Republicans are pushing for laws that would allow criminal charges against educators and librarians who expose children to sexual material. Similarly, the Board of Education in Carroll County, Maryland, unanimously voted in favor of a policy to restrict "sexually explicit" books from schools on January 10.
