Could Michelle Obama Be The Democrats' Secret Weapon For 2024?

A notion that was once dismissed as a far-right fantasy by mainstream media and Republican commentators, often associated with figures such as Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), has now gained traction.

Both the New York Post and Fox News are actively suggesting the possibility, or even the probability, that the Democrats, in a state of desperation, might nominate Michelle Obama as their presidential candidate, replacing the incumbent Joe Biden.

The argument is that Obama could potentially win back the African American voters who are currently drifting towards Donald Trump. Furthermore, it is suggested that she could supersede the highly unpopular Kamala Harris without any backlash from the minority community.

Michelle Obama is often perceived as a less affable version of Barack Obama, drawing comparisons to a younger, African American Hillary Clinton.

Joel Gilbert, an author who has written extensively on this subject, insists that the former first lady is a political powerhouse, who had been planning a significant career for herself since her early days as the ambitious daughter of a Democratic precinct captain from Chicago.

Michelle Obama does possess certain qualities that are less apparent in Biden. She is not suffering from cognitive decline, she does not have a shuffling gait, and she did not authorize the entry of 10 million undocumented immigrants into the country to bolster the Democratic voter base. She was also not implicated in a large-scale money laundering operation involving a corrupt sibling and a drug-addicted son.

Obama is also well-liked in certain circles, which may explain why she was voted the world's most respected woman for several consecutive years. I know individuals who become visibly excited at the mere mention of her name as a potential presidential candidate.

However, there are factors that make me question her potential performance as a presidential candidate. Michelle's celebrity status is partly due to approximately 10% of respondents in a Gallup poll naming her as their "most admired woman." In 2020, Vice President Kamala Harris trailed behind Michelle at 6%, with Melania Trump at 4%. These surveys, while flattering, do not necessarily indicate that Michelle would excel in a presidential race.

Despite her frequent appearances on numerous TV shows, these appearances are carefully managed by hosts who are overwhelmingly sympathetic and rarely pose challenging political questions to their esteemed guest. Having the support of Oprah Winfrey and Joy Reid can certainly benefit a presidential candidate, but it is unlikely to guarantee a ticket to the White House.

It is also not a given that the immense popularity of Michelle's husband, largely due to years of media hype, will automatically transfer to his wife. Despite his tirades against MAGA Republicans, white racists, and his use of the federal government against his political opponents, Barack Obama has a charm that is notably lacking in Michelle. She often comes across as a less charismatic version of Barack, drawing comparisons to a younger, African American Hillary Clinton.

Michelle Obama will need to be cautious to avoid making the self-centered comments she often makes when portraying herself as a victim of white racism and sexism.

In 2021, for instance, she extensively discussed how pedestrians in Washington ignored her while she was walking her dog. This lack of attention, she claimed, was true even for those who paused to pet her dog. I would like to point out that those who stop to pet my long-haired Dachshund while I'm walking him rarely engage in conversation with me, nor do I expect them to.

The media will predictably downplay Michelle's verbal missteps, but some of these outbursts will likely reach the public. Despite the media's concerted efforts to portray her as exceedingly charming, these efforts may fall short if she frequently portrays herself as a victim. While the Democratic base would likely support Michelle's nomination, it is uncertain who else would.

I am not suggesting that Michelle would enter a presidential race. The Democratic Party will begin that contest with a significant advantage. It will have the support of corporate capitalists, Hollywood moguls, government workers, and media manipulators of reality. This is not even considering the election manipulators the party has at its disposal.

However, I am not convinced that nominating Michelle Obama will provide the Democrats with any additional advantage. Their most significant assets are their organizational and financial edge and the availability of a completely compliant media to spin news in their favor and keep their scandals hidden. Robert Cahaly of the Republican Trafalgar Group was taken aback by the staggering turnout that the Democrats produced for midterm elections, defying his own meticulous calculations. Somehow, they were able to generate votes that observers were unaware of.

The competence of their presidential candidate may be less important than these other factors in securing a Democratic victory. Therefore, running Biden may not cost the Democrats the race. And replacing him with Michelle may not provide the Democrats with any special advantage.
